Falice is a community organizer and has been in the Alton Park community for three and a half years.
Alton Park Development Corp. in partnership with Southern Adventist University will honor Martin Luther King Jr. for his birthday on Monday, Jan. 18 through “Community Volunteer Service Day.” Students from the university’s Latin American Club will work with participants of the Neighborhood Environmental College and perform various tasks and duties in and around the Piney Woods Resource Center. The students and participants will use their day off and celebrate by working together and supporting community in honor of respected and fallen leader.

Last Saturday, 10 members of the East Lake Neighborhood Association and 15 other individuals donated their time to the "Building Stable Live" food drive. Volunteers took in monetary donations and food items to help fill the pantry of the Building Stable Lives office. The $390 and donated food items will help feed families in the East Lake community that find themselves in need this holiday season. Last year, Building Stable Lives was able to help feed 33 families. "We raised more money and doubled our donations of food items compared to last year and we had a great time doing it,” East Lake Neighborhood Association President Lora Salter said.

The U.S. Postal Service has added Eastlake and Highland Park post offices to the closure list. The post office located on E. 34th Street will be one of four local community post offices targeted for closure. Eastlake Neighborhood Association president Lora Salter has been circulating a petition to keep the post office open. Local postal workers union 192 will hold a town hall meeting at Temple Baptist Church, located at 3204 Clio Ave., on Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. For more information, contact local APW 192 at 499-3703.
