While it seems like school just started, progress reports are just around the corner. Margie Bagby, owner of the new local franchise of tutoring company Above Grade Level, said parents should immediately seek help for a child who is falling behind.
“The further they get behind, the harder it is to get caught up,” she said. “It causes the child more frustration and affects their confidence.”
Above Grade Level, which opened in the Chattanooga area in April, provides in-home tutoring for children in kindergarten through 12th grade.
What makes Above Grade Level unique is the face-to-face personalized attention it offers, Bagby said. The program provides an in-depth evaluation to determine a student’s skill gaps, and the student’s tutor then develops a curriculum to fill those gaps and bring the student up to or above grade level.
“We guarantee our results,” said Bagby, explaining that if a student’s scores do not improve by 10 percent (or a grade level) in 35 tutoring sessions, the student receives an additional 15 hours of tutoring at no further cost.
If a child is not motivated to learn, the sessions are discontinued, she said.
“There’s no use in wasting the parents’ money,” said Bagby.
In addition to offering tutoring for struggling students, Above Grade Level also offers a scholar program for gifted children. Test-preparation courses are available for all.
The next PSAT class is Saturday, Sept. 6 and the next SAT class is Saturday, Sept. 27, with both classes beginning at 9 a.m.
Attendees are given practice tests to determine where their weaknesses are, and they are assigned a math, science or English tutor to address their main deficiency.
“They get used to the types of questions on the test, and there’s someone there they can actually ask questions and who can give them positive feedback,” Bagby said.
Bagby, who had dyslexia as a child, wants to show her students they can learn despite setbacks. Through a lot of blood, sweat and tears, the North Chattanooga resident was able to complete her master’s in business and worked in finance before opening Above Grade Level.
“It’s my way of giving back to the community,” she said of her decision to start the business.
