HHS wrestling team brings home A-AA State Championship trophy

A month ago, the Hixson High School wrestling team hadn’t won an individual state championship since 1973.

In mid-February, that all changed.

HHS had 12 of its 14 wrestlers qualify for the A-AA State Championship. Ten of those 12 placed in the top six in their weight division.

As a whole, the team won the tournament and brought home a handsome trophy to prove it.

“Individually we did our job and did what we had to do to win as a team,” said Jovarrus Stegall, a senior and one of the captains of the team.

The team has had a great year, said Coach Garrick Hall, and the wrestlers attribute it to really bonding as a team and working together.

“This year we are more a team than the past two years I’ve been here,” said junior McKenzie Martin, also a captain. “Everyone just worked hard and did what they were supposed to.”

The team’s goal for the coming years is to run out of space in the school’s trophy case, he added.
