First Pioneer Days a success

Blacksmiths demonstrate their craft at the event.

Soddy-Daisy’s Poe’s Tavern Pioneer Days celebration was a great success, especially for its first year, said Soddy-Daisy Vice Mayor Rick Nunley.

“We had several hundred people attend and had great music and demonstrations,” he said.

About two dozen craftspeople such as weavers, woodworkers and basket makers were at the event demonstrating their various crafts, said event organizer Bud Ellis.

“We wanted the kind of crafts people did just to survive,” he said. “Before they die out on us, we want to teach people how to do these things.”

Many demonstrators took the opportunity to wear period dress, he added.

“That really lent a lot to it,” said Ellis, who wants to double the number of craftspeople at next year’s event.

He said he hopes to have the event around the same time next year.
