Soddy-Daisy City Manager Hardie Stulce announced his resignation at the City Commission’s July 17 meeting. Mayor Janice Cagle also announced her resignation and Vice Mayor Rick Nunley was named mayor.
Commissioner Patti Skates then nominated Max Lowe to fill the vacant commission seat. Lowe has been a member of the Fire Department for 30-40 years, said Cagle.
“He’s always been very community-minded and knows the inner workings of the city,” she said of Lowe, who was named commissioner by a unanimous vote. He will serve until the November election, and at this point said he does not plan to run.
Cagle was then nominated to the city manager post, which she held for nearly a decade before Stulce took over the job five years ago in July 2009. Stulce also served as city manager for two years before Cagle’s 10 years of service.
The nomination was also approved by a unanimous vote.
“The commission thought it would be a smoother transition,” Cagle said of her decision to step down as mayor and take over the city manager post. “We’ve got a lot going on with different grants and Hardie has kept me abreast of everything.”
She said her goals as city manager remain the same as when she was mayor, which include making sure the city has the funding to do what it needs to do, such as paving roads.
“Hardie left the city in very good shape,” Cagle added.
Stulce said in his resignation letter that he plans to return to his career in the railroad industry.
A new vice mayor will be named at the commission’s Aug. 7 meeting.
