Sarah carefully peaked out through a crack in the entrance of the tent. Her husband stood near three strange men as they lounged beneath a tree and ate the bread she’d kneaded for them.
She froze as she heard one say her name.
“I will return to you this time next year, and Sarah, your wife, will have a son,” one of the strange men told her husband.
Sarah’s eyes widened in disbelief. Then the irony hit her, and she couldn’t keep a chuckle from escaping her lips. She was 90 years old.
Many may be familiar with this story — that of Sarah and Abraham from the Bible’s book of Genesis. As the story goes, Sarah does give birth to a son in her old age, naming him Isaac.
But what actress Anita Gutschick wants to show is what it must have felt like for women like Sarah to live those biblical lives. As CEO and main performer of Women of the Bible, she does just that, and on Aug. 23, she’ll be performing at Clear Creek Church of Christ.
Gutschick acts out many characters of the Bible as a part of her traveling program — Eve, Noah’s wife, Sarah, Esther, Ruth, Jezebel, Mary, Martha and more. With each act, she seeks to bring her audience into a different time period and a different perspective.
“From the time we are little children we hear about these Bible women and we read their stories, but we rarely get to see someone actually portray them and get into their skin and project what they might have been feeling in those times,” said event committee member Suzanne Belcher. “And that’s what [Gutschick] brings.”
Belcher said she and some of the other ladies from Clear Creek saw Gutschick perform at another local church earlier this year.
“We thought, ‘This was so good; more women need to be able to have that experience,’” she said.
The event at Clear Creek will feature three different sessions. The morning and afternoon session are for women only, as a part of the church’s biannual Ladies Inspiration Day. The evening session, however, is open to the whole family.
“We just want to stress that every woman in this town is invited and we hope that they’ll come,” said Belcher. “When they see her on Saturday, they’ll come back and bring their families that night. The more people we can pack in there to see her the better we’re going to like it.”
To find out more and register for the event, call Clear Creek’s church office at 877-6232 or email email@example.com. The cost to make a reservation for lunch is $5.
The church is located at 5612 Hixson Pike.
