The Mothers of Preschoolers at Red Bank Baptist Church group is starting a new program this fall called “A Beautiful Mess.” Meetings are held certain Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon, and the first meeting, titled “Welcome to the Mess,” Sept. 16.
MOPs caters to moms of children who are newborn to age 5, said Blair Ballard, co-organizer of the group.
“Our group is here to give support and encouragement to young mothers,” Ballard said.
The group typically plans an activity or craft to make at each meeting. For example, during the Sept. 30 meeting titled “Mending Things That Are Torn,” attendees will be given a hands-on tutorial on basic sewing.
Child care is provided during meetings, so moms get a little bit of time to themselves.
That way they don’t have to worry about juggling kids while doing activities, said Ballard.
In addition, she said the group helps moms make personal contacts and feel plugged in with a group.
“I know I have a 2-and-a-half-year-old son, and sometimes it’s just nice to have adult interaction,” she said. “We love our children, but we love being able to do that.”
Most of the MOPS members go to Red Bank Baptist, so the group does have a Christian element to it.
“We offer Christian support and advice and encourage and uplift each other,” said Ballard. “It’s just nice to know you’re not alone when it comes to raising your kids. It’s nice to know that no one else is perfect either.”
She said group members come from all over the North River area; from Red Bank and Hixson to Soddy-Daisy and Signal Mountain.
Future meetings follow the Hamilton County Schools schedule and will be held Sept. 30, Oct. 7 and 14, Nov. 4 and 18 and Dec. 2 and 16.
