Birthday parties, get-well wishes, anniversaries and even Boss’s Day (which happens to be today) — it’s easy to find reasons to visit Cookies By Design on Hixson Pike.
A visit to the storefront reveals the smells of fresh baked goods and shelves that are brimming with colorful cookies. The franchised cookie shop is owned locally by Deborah Hutton, who gets help from her daughters and input from her 4-year-old granddaughter Roxie to bake and decorate each cookie by hand.
Much like a flower shop, Cookies By Design makes enjoying its treats even easier by delivering its bouquets of vibrant cookies to customers. The shop sells one cookie at a time up to elaborate cookie bouquets of 15 cookies.
“I think it’s a unique thing, a great alternative to the normal flowers. Flowers are nice, but you can eat these flowers,” Hutton laughed. “And they taste as good as they look.”
The intricate cookie designs range from friendly ghosts and pumpkins for Halloween to hearts and roses for a significant other to get-well messages like “Cookies are good medicine,” surrounded by teddy bear cookies clad in doctors’ gear.
The national franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and Hutton said her Chattanooga location has been open for the past 25 of those years. She has worked at the shop for the past 18 years and owned it for the past five.
