After more than 105 years in business, Buddy’s Shoe Repair in Hixson is freshening up its look.
Founder James Dee Scallia came to the United States and opened a shoe repair store in Sandusky, Ohio, in 1906. He then moved to Chattanooga and opened Dee’s Shoe Repair in 1917. When his son Andrew Scallia took over, he sold the Dee’s name and the store became Buddy’s.
Buddy’s has been in its current building since 1981, and Andrew’s son Michael Scallia now runs the day to day operations. His mother Barbara Scallia, wife Flower Scallia and cousin also work at the store.
The waiting area at Buddy’s has been completely remodeled using reclaimed barn wood, said Michael Scallia. The room now features old pictures of his great-grandfather as well as a sliding glass window that looks into the area where repairs are made.
“We want it to be not only a place where you get your shoes fixed but an attraction in itself,” he said.
