Poplar Creek Spa brings new services to Ooltewah

Emily Simmons is passionate about helping people relax — something especially important as the harried holiday season sets in.

“We see spa as a reset button rather than an indulgence,” said the owner of Ooltewah’s Poplar Creek Spa. “It’s a part of self-care that’s a healthy way of dealing with life’s stresses and restoring balance.”

Poplar Creek massage therapists John Ragsdale, Emily Simmons and Cherish Waldrop, from left, show off the new Ooltewah spa’s relaxing environment. With more than 50 years of combined massage experience, Simmons said the staff at Poplar Creek is more than qualified to help clients relax and rejuvenate.

Several months ago she purchased Body Mechanics, a local massage therapy business, and combined the massage services with a full spa service menu including hot stone massage, Thai massage, reflexology, body polishes, wraps, a sinus relief service and the popular foot “fassage” that is similar to a facial for someone’s feet.

“We are the only day spa in the Ooltewah-Collegedale area and the only place people can get a Thai massage other than going downtown,” said Simmons. “Thai massage is essentially an assisted yoga session where the therapist does all the work. It’s great to help restore flexibility for athletes and the elderly.”

In addition to a wide variety of services, Simmons also makes all of the spa products in-house with all-natural organic ingredients.

“Since the products are usually made fresh the morning of a client’s services, it’s easy for us to customize or change ingredients based on an individual’s needs or preferences,” she said.

Simmons focuses all her services on relaxation through the combination of all-natural products, an especially relaxed atmosphere including a meditation room for clients to enjoy before or after services and complimentary tea and cookies.

“Stress is one of the major contributors to all kinds of diseases,” she said. “Just taking time to unwind and remind yourself about what’s important in life and reconnect with your spiritual side is so important. As Americans we’re hard-driving and don’t take much time for ourselves to sit and just be.”

The spa, which is located at 5906 Main St. in Ooltewah, employs nine massage therapists with a combined 50-plus years of experience. The business also offers couples’ massages.
