Lions Club starting new seniors group

Signal Mountain Lions Club’s recently formed Senior Service Committee is organizing a weekly gathering for seniors at Bachman Community Center on Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m. starting Nov. 13. The events are open to seniors age 60 and older living in the 37377 ZIP code.

“We want to make this their event,” said Lion John Moon, a member of the Senior Service Committee and head of the Bachman subcommittee. “The Lions are willing to listen to what the seniors want and provide that at Bachman.”

A soup lunch prepared by the Lions will be served at each meeting, and Bingo is the activity planned for the first gathering. Possibilities for the future could include anything from tax preparation assistance to instruction on using social media, such as how to upload photos of grandchildren to share with friends and family.

“We’re hoping to get enough seniors [Nov. 13] to tell us the kind of events they want to have,” he said. “We’re willing to change our agenda to meet the needs of the community, because this is really for them.”

The Lions inducted 14 new club members this year, which is far more than the usual five to six inductees, and the Senior Service Committee was formed as the club began considering ways to expand their service activities, said Moon.

“We were looking for an activity ongoing on Signal Mountain that would provide a meaningful community service,” he said. “There’s really no regular senior service activity other than at Alexian.”

Bachman Community Center is at 2815 Anderson Pike and can be reached at 886-4842.
