The Tyner Community Center and a group loosely called the Tyner Community Group are hosting a District 7 School Board Candidate Forum July 16 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Schools considered part of the recently redistricted District 7 include Bess T. Shepherd Elementary, Apison Elementary, East Brainerd Elementary, Westview Elementary and East Hamilton School. Candidates Ralph Miller and Donna Horn have both confirmed their attendance. Linda Mosley currently holds the district’s School Board seat, but she is not running for re-election.

“Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come to the forum,” said event organizer Nan Zamata. “Even if you don’t have a child in the school system, 60 percent of your county property tax goes to the schools and these candidates are the ones who decide what happens with that tax money.”

Zamata said the format of the program will be organized but will also allow for audience interaction with the candidates.

“I want people to be able to ask questions and interact with the candidates,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the community interaction and hopefully a packed room.”
