When Kids4Christ founder Gail Marks started helping and working with at-risk children of the community 10 years ago she had no idea what she was starting.
“It’s surreal in a way because we didn’t have plans that it would go this far,” she said. “Looking back on the many people who contributed time, money, support and help, it’s really amazing to see how it’s evolved.”

During its annual Back 2 School Blast, Kids4Christ hands out backpacks and school supplies to area children in need.
On June 26, 2002, the ministry began as a summer activity with not even 20 students. Last month Marks said K4C reached its highest attendance: 140 kids.
“We are trying to meet needs of children who fall into the cracks,” she said. “There may be no one at home to help with homework or read to them. We’re trying to give them hope, a choice and the ‘can do’ [attitude].”
Kids4Christ is a nonprofit ministry which focuses on education and spiritual growth activities at its location at 108 W. Withers St. in LaFayette. K4C will even pick up children living within the community.
Currently the ministry has KidsFirst Bible lessons every Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. which include a full meal and are open to all between the ages of 3-14.
K4C tries not to duplicate other agencies’ efforts, instead partnering with other organizations. Marks said she sees a great need for these types of programs for the children of the community.
“We want to meet needs no one else is meeting,” she said. “There is no charge for anything we do here. It’s a ministry.”
Marks gives all the credit to God for the ministry and its purpose, saying it all just came together.
In order to continue to provide for larger numbers of partcipants K4C is in need of more space, volunteers and donations. Although the 501c(3) does receive some government funds, it operates solely on donations. Individuals, churches and businesses contribute the resources that fund programming for the children, Marks said.
K4C has an open door policy and welcomes anyone in the community to drop in and learn about the ministry during regular office hours.
