Things will look a little different for locals traveling through the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport in 2012 as the airport implements a new security screening process and an additional security lane for all departing passengers.
“The new scanner brings the latest technology to the Chattanooga airport, giving passengers a seamless experience at the checkpoint while providing peace of mind regarding their security while traveling,” said Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Director of Marketing and Communications Christina Siebold.
According to Transportation Security Administration spokesman Jon Allen, the new advanced imaging technology scanner that has been implemented at the local airport is programmed with a new type of software called automated target recognition software. Unlike other scanning software, ATR scans passengers for weapons and explosives without allowing the security officer to view an outline of the passenger’s body.
Instead, the software presents the security officer with a generic outline of the human body when an anomaly is detected or a green screen with the word “OK” if no problems are detected, according to Allen. This process increases privacy by never giving a security officer an option to see a passenger-specific body outline, he said.
“We remain committed to implementing technologies that strengthen passenger privacy while ensuring the highest level of security,” said TSA Administrator John S. Pistole in a press release. “In addition to improving the passenger experience at the checkpoint, advanced imaging technology continues to give us the greatest opportunity to detect and deter evolving threats to aviation.”
An additional security lane will also be available during peak periods to speed up the process for local travelers, said Siebold.
“Both of these improvements support our goals to provide a safe and secure, as well as convenient and customer service oriented, travel experience for our regional passengers,” she said.
