Lions steer toward community outreach

The Lookout Valley Lions Club will host its third annual Car, Truck and Bike Show Oct. 17 to raise funds for the club’s Christmas food basket project.

“It’s a good family-oriented car show,” Lions Club vice president Joe Graham said. “It’s not only a way to get cars out of the garage, but a day to get out and just kind of mingle and talk.”

The event is hosted by the Lions Club and held at the John A. Patten Community Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pre-registration costs $15 and registration the day of the show is $20 for cars, trucks or motorcycles that wish to participate. Graham said that vendors are also welcome to a booth for $25.

Lions Club members man a concessions trailer with snacks and drinks for sale, while judges pick the best of show, people’s choice, ladies choice, best engine, best interior and top 50 cars, trucks and motorcycles. There will also be music and door prizes for visitors.

Graham said all the money raised during the event goes toward Lions Club charities or back into the community.

“At Christmas we do food baskets,” Graham said. “We served well over 120 families last year, gave away 30 bicycles and boodles of toys.”

Each Christmas food basket is specialized for the family so that if one family has four children there will be enough food for a week or two and a few toys for under the tree. Graham said over the last few years the number of families in the community needing a little help during the holidays has risen. The members have already begun to collect toys for this year’s baskets and are willing to accept toy donations during the car show.

“Our motto is we serve,” Graham said. “We don’t just say those words, we live by those words.”
