Collegedale Academy chemistry and physical science teacher Randy Heilman is the winner of the Excellence in Teaching award presented by the Alumni Awards Foundation.
“I just feel very honored and pleased,” said Heilman. “It’s nice to receive recognition for hard work and effort on behalf of your students. It’s also an honor and privilege to work for the Lord and for young people.”

This is Heilman’s 12th year at CA and he has taught for 33 years. His nomination included statements from the principal, superintendent and peer teachers.
“What we look for is a teacher who is a leader at their school, who sets a standard, who is an inspiration,” said Melanie Eddlemon, associate director of the AAF. “Because we support Christian schools, the mentor the teacher is to his or her students is also a big one.”
Eddlemon said recipients of the award have transformed their departments and are active in their communities as ambassadors for their schools. They are creative and adventurous in their teaching styles, transforming the subject matter into something that appeals to their students.
Heilman is known for integrating technology into the classroom.
He uses an Interwrite pad in class to answer one-on-one questions during work time. The pad projects his doodles on a screen so other students can follow along if they want to.
Heilman said the pad really does draw students in to learn something new when it would be easy to hurry through a worksheet to chat with friends.
“I don’t think the teachers get the honor and recognition they deserve as life changers,” said Eddlemon.
She said she hopes the award will encourage Heilman to continue to think bigger and dream bigger about his career.
