HEARD ON THE TOWN
CHATTANOOGA District Senior Olympics men's and women's softball games will begin today at 6:30 p.m. at the Summit Softball Complex in Collegedale. The public is invited free of charge.
Among the athletes participating will be Teresa Richie, 76, who has played in numerous National Senior Games and has been inducted into the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame.
"I am a competitive person, and playing sports is what keeps me going," she said in a news release. "I believe that doing things you're interested in keeps a person active. Just walking or exercising gets boring. I like the challenge of the game."
Last May, 417 senior athletes registered to compete in the Chattanooga District Senior Olympics, said event spokeswoman Ginny Stone. Many of the competitors advance to the Tennessee State Olympics in Nashville, as well as the National Senior Games in San Francisco later this summer, she said. Eligibility for the state and national games is determined the year before the competition.
Tennessee Senior Olympics began in 1981 with a mission that has continued for over 25 years -- to promote healthy lifestyles for senior adults through fitness, sports and an active involvement in life. The games are sponsored by Senior Neighbors, Chattanooga Parks and Recreation Department, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Sunny 92.3.
